Hamburg
in shock: Escalating violence against politicians: Gay Senator
attacked with knife in the street in the middle of the day, another
senator got a cream cake in his face during a debate.
Dr.
Roger Kusch, law councillor (in Hamburg called senator) for the
Christian Democratic Party in the City Parliament of Hamburg was on
Thursday February 12th, attacked by a 41 years old woman
with a pocketknife.
“You
gay pig, you have raped my child” said the assumed mentally retarded
woman and ran towards the senator.
She cut him in the hip resulting in a bleeding wound, which
needed to be sewn up with five stitches. Immediately thereafter, she
was arrested by the Police. According to the Police department in
Hamburg, there were no political motives behind the attack.
The
attack occurred in the middle of the pedestrian zone in a shopping
street in the Neugraben-Fischbek area at 11 o’clock in the morning.
There are soon elections for the city parliament in Hamburg and Kusch
was this morning working in a campaign tent handing out information
material and answering questions from people in the street. The woman
attacked him from behind, and it could have been worse, if 20 year old
law student André Sawallich, from the youth organisation of the
Christian Democratic Party who was working with Kusch in the campaign
tent this morning, had not grabbed the woman’s arms and prevented
further attacks.
Thereafter,
people who were passing by in the shopping street stopped her from
escaping and held her until the police arrived few minutes later. At
noon she was interrogated, and the police could inform the press that
nothing indicated that her actions had been politically motivated in
any way. She is assumed to be mentally retarded and she has earlier
been charged with telephone abuse. However, this is the first time she
has been charged with violence. It is unclear whether she attacked
Kusch coincidentally, or if she had targeted him in advance and looked
him up. The Police also emphasized that despite this unfortunate
event, there will be no special police protection for the politicians
in Hamburg in the future either. Politicians will generally be given
the same protection as any other citizen with few exceptions. Kusch
has cancelled all appointments for the next 2 days, but he will
continue campaigning again on Saturday.

It
is only one week ago that the independent science councillor in
Hamburg’s city council and physician Dr. Jörg Dräger was attacked
during a debate with students and other central politicians from all
parties at the University of Hamburg (where the students have been
striking for weeks). Suddenly someone in the audience threw a cream
cake at him.
