Conceptualization of Modern
Western Sexual Orientation in an African Society.

ISSUES: In resent times, no other issues
have elicited controversy and stretched the challenges culture and
tradition in the African society more than the question of sexuality and
sexual orientation.
The
concept of sexuality and sexual orientation in traditional African
societies has rooted origins and formations that are deeply interwoven
with culture and traditions and as a result draws its definitions and
status from such.
However,
in the wake of the present globalization trend, sexual rights, and freedom
of sexual orientation, most African societies have come under tremendous
pressure the draw the rightful lines as a result of inroads of western
sexual orientation that are totally alien and antithetical to the
traditional sexual orientation of African societies.
This
paper will discuss the concept of sexuality in the African perspective and
highlight the challenge, pressure, brought upon these societies as a
result of the inroads of these western sexual orientations.
DESCRIPTIONS: The issues discussed in this paper
are based on a research and experience working as a sexual and
reproductive health trainer/counselor with the Bonesa Khanya Project in
South Africa.
CONTENT: This paper will discuss the
concept of sexuality in African societies and the challenges and
confrontation brought on this societies as a result of the inroad and
interaction with western sexual orientation in the 21st century.
