The Aids in Culture Evening Tour on 9th December 2006: “Doce-Treinta” and “Tom’s Leather Bar”

© By Pablo Herrera/Enkidu

The weather started to get colder, today’s evening darkness began to surround the landscape, the Academic and Cultural Activities had finished for the day, but something was missing… Nightlife!

It was 9th December, a common Saturday night in Mexico City. Conference Delegates Fred Eggan (Former AIDS Coordinator for the City of Los Angeles), Derek Rushton (Program in Visual & Cultural Studies, University of Rochester), Pedro Soto, Walt Senterfitt (both: Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP)) and myself, decided to take a walk through the neighbourhood called “Zona Rosa” in order to have some fun.

Everything started (as most of Mexico City’s gay things do) in the corner of Amberes street and Reforma Avenue. First, we took a walk around Amberes street to make a rapid scan of Zona Rosa’s hot spots.

We saw Lipstick Bar, 42nd Street Coffee Shop, Doce-Treinta Coffee Shop Restaurant & Bar, Be Gay-Be Proud Coffee Shop, Boy Bar Club, Freezing Bar, Pussy Bar, Gia Bar and Papi Bar. After that, we changed our direction just to say hello to Hibrido Night Club, El Antro Discotheque and Crazy Club; walking distance but not in Amberes Street.

After such a walk we were starving, but the decision was very difficult ‘cause some wanted a coffee, some wanted a beer, and some wanted to eat… We almost decided to finish the tour and going to the hotel to have some rest, but then, I remembered “Doce-Treinta had everything we wanted together.

So we went there. The place was crowded, but as always, the manager could get a nice table for us.

First comment from Conference Delegates was about the variety of dishes they served, after listening about dinner recommendations, drinks, coffee and then the food arrived.

After some time talking about sex, marriage, AIDS and nightlife we decided to move towards “Tom’s Leather Bar”, where I was told everything was set up to have fun.

We got there 10 minutes later. Once there, Conference Delegates were very surprised finding a “classic European leather bar”.

After staring paintings on the wall, we went upstairs to get some drinks. Delegates immediately started to mix up with the clients of the bar, but after some hours enjoying the place the time has como to leave ‘cause the next day conferences would continue…

Enkidu Magazine really appreciates the facilities provided for Conference Delegates and the creation of this article by “DOCE TREINTA” and “TOM’S LEATHER BAR”  We also wish to use this opportunity to thank all the personnel working in both places for their wonderful service and attention.
