"To
live is worse than to die" - Discrimination against female drug users
in China

Context:
As
a big barrier to the UN AIM of "universal access to prevention and
care for all", HIV/AIDS related stigma is strong in China. However,
there have been rare detailed qualitative materials on this topic gathered
and analysis from angle of history and culture completed.
Purpose:
To
reveal the real situation of discrimination female drug users suffered,
and find out the historical and cultural factors of the phenomenon.
Method
Observation
and in depth interview held in 4 detoxicating centers in Gansu Province,
China through a field survey in 2003.
Findings
The
evidence show that there were drug using female sex workers in our society
who suffering very severe discrimination and abuse silently. Without
improvement of their extremely marginalized position, it would be
impossible to change their high risk behaviors. Eventually, the nation as
a whole will pay grievous losses for this discriminatory attitude, which
is rooted in almost everyone's mind, through thousands of years of
Confucian tradition. In the extremely hierarchically organized society of
China, it was the basic means for the feudal ruling class to socialize and
inculcate in its people the value of strict hierarchy to control deviant
behaviors. That is the historical origin of the strong HIV/AIDS related
stigma and discrimination. In the past two decades, China has made very
rapid social and economical development, but has not undergone a
transformation of gender relations and attitudes towards sexuality, which
remain puritanical, while in practice, it is women who are blamed for
"disorderly" sex and drug use.
