Spring Semester 2008
Course
AE 2008 1 (11 February - 7 March, 2008)
Course
AE 2008 2 (5 May - 2 June, 2008)
Enkidu Magazine provides
a global forum for dialogue and debate, where
diverse voices from all over the world can come
together, make connections, discuss topics of
mutual interest and develop new ideas across
linguistic, cultural and academic barriers; where
scientists in the humanities and social sciences
working with Queer Studies, Gender Studies and
related topics can meet and communicate about
their work. Our conferences are multi-lingual
events in which we nourish and cultivate global
community across language barriers.
Delegates
are free to use any of the official conference
languages for their presentation, and translation
with interpreter between the conference languages
will be provided, but when possible, the Academic
Committee of the Conference encourages that
delegates present papers in other languages than
their maternal language. In the Queer Studies
Symposium 2008, we will for instance have scholars
whose native language is English, presenting
papers in Castillian, scholars with French as
native language, presenting in English, and native
speakers of Castillian who will present papers in
English.
Delegates
(academic staff and students) from the UCSJ who
would like to present papers in English at the
Queer Studies Easter Symposium are encouraged to
do so and we organise a pre-conference course in
Academic English for students who want to prepare
a paper in English but need some additional
training in grammar, style and academic
expresssions.
The course has been developed
for students and staff at the UCSJ but anyone
interested in improving their academic English is
welcome to sign up.
The
course will consist in 4 two hours sessions covering
the following issues:
- Academic Reading
- Academic Writing
- Academic
Listening
- Seminar Skills
- Research Skills
- Lectures and
Note-taking skills
- Reflection
around the nature of multicultural and
multilingual communication
Course Aims:
- Develop academic
writing and study skills
- Improve language
and fluency
- Build knowledge
of current teaching and learning methods
- Build confidence
Course Content
- Writing:
academic style, editing and correcting,
organising and planning high quality essays,
effective summary writing and note-taking
skills
- Reading: focused
reading activities linked to writing tasks.
Skimming, scanning and inferring meaning from
context, reading under deadline pressure

conference sessions.

During the course,
the students work on their own papers while
receiving internet tuition by the academic
committee of the conference, as well as comments
and suggestions during the 4 sessions.
The level of
tuition provided will be appropriate to the
abilities of the participants. During the first
class there will be a language placement test.
The programme uses
a workshop and needs-based format. Participants
are required to produce pieces of writing
representative of their subject areas and academic
interests in acceptable formats for regular
evaluation. On the oral side, students are
expected to give frequent formal seminar
presentations. Active participation in class
discussions is a vital component of the course,
and will improve and operationalize the students'
English. Language work is based on a combination
of the use of prescribed texts and the papers in
progress by the students. Students are also
encouraged to provide material which relates
specifically to their disciplinary needs. A
diploma is awarded on successful completion of the
course.
