On 23 March, 2008, the first conference sessions of the year, were held in the Auditorium of Hotel Catedral. The paper presentations started with the panel session "Queering the Arts" and the presentation of Christian Mieves, from Newcastle University (UK). Christian Mieves is also one of the conference artists in 2008 and from 24 March to 29 March, he will have an exhibition with the title "On the Edge" in the University Claustro de Sor Juana.

In continuation, Irving Dominguez (Fundación del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México) spoke about representations of male bodies in the art of Mexican artist Hector Falcón.

In the second session "Imaging and Imagining Queerness and Otherness on the wide screen: Iran and Spain", Roshanak Kheshti from UC Berkeley presented a paper about Cross-dressing and Passing in Iranian Cinema: Queering Gender Performance in Iranian Cinema and Culture.

This paper was followed by Santiago Fouz-Hernández (Durham University, UK), who spoke about Queer Bodies in Contemporary Spanish Cinema.

Thereafter, Juan Carlos Cuéllar, Mexican theater director writer and actor, spoke about his Queer processes of creation in his recent theater plays.

Finally, Lucilla Parga from the National University of Educational Sciences (UPN) spoke about the construction of gender identities among female students and teachers in Mexican Secondary Schools.

After the sessions of the day, Lars took the conference delegates on a walk from Hotel Catedral to the University Claustro de Sor Juana where the rest of the conference sessions where the following conference sessions were held. As we were walking, we admired colonial architecture and the many 16th century churches and convents along the route.

It had been a long day. On the first day of the Symposium, we had not even had a lunch break and after the city walk to the University, everyone was hungry and we ended the day with supper in a nearby restaurant.
